i heart faces photo challenge | best face of 2012

the current photo challenge over at i heart faces is “best face of 2012″ (if you don’t know about i heart faces and you love (or even like) photography a little bit go check them out!).

eek. best face of 2012. seriously?! i have no idea what that even means. of course, my favorite faces are the faces of my own girls. my favorite photographs – photographs of them. but, i decided not to enter a photograph of them here. i wanted to challenge myself to enter a client image and to explain to you – and to myself – why i chose the image i did.

instead of going all the way back through the year’s images, i decided to choose from my most recent sessions. and, here it is, my favorite.

why do i love this? it is the type of moment that i strive to capture at every session. it is emotion encapsulated in a photograph forever. this dad. he. loves. this. little. girl. truly. the two of them together, sharing a moment, magic. there is nothing spectacular here. this is not styled just right. this is not technically perfect. but, looking at it gives me the warm and fuzzies. it does. it makes me feel something. and, that is important to me.

in this new year, i want to strive to create something more than just a good photograph. i want to give people more of myself by giving them more of themselves in their photos. authenticity. does this make sense? i truly hope it does. because, living more authentically (and working more authentically) is my goal in 2013.

the holiday mini sessions this year were a huge success. i forgot how much i loved shooting mini sessions! they are fast-paced and action-packed. and, i think i can honestly say that everyone had a great time. here are a few (okay, a little more than a few) of my favorites from the day. enjoy.

this month’s photo challenge over at i heart faces is “all boy.” this is my entry.

whether it is out of control hair, freckles, a quirky grin, or wide eyes, i love the things that set us apart from each other. i especially love seeing (and photographing) these things in children.

i may even have squealed in delight the day i met this guy . . . that face, those eyes, that smattering of freckles! oh my. my camera loved him and so did i.

the holiday rush is almost over. as things quieten down a bit, i look forward to spending quality time with family and friends and to reflecting on 2011, both on a personal and a professional level (as if, for me, those two things were distinct…). this means that i will soon be taking some time off from the blog and from the business. i find this to be absolutely necessary to preserving the self i want and need to be for my family. sometimes, you must step away.

but, that time is not here yet. so, let me share some of the images i captured during my afternoon with sweet Elsie a few weeks back.

i just love this family. i photographed them last fall and couldn’t have been more pleased when they asked me to photograph their newest addition (and, of course, big sister Nora and the rest of the family). enjoy.

this past weekend, i shot my last family session of the year.

it was fitting that i ended the year with this family, which i have photographed three times since last fall. the first time we met, it was for a maternity/family session, which was quickly followed by a newborn session for their sweet fourth child, jude. when we met on sunday, i couldn’t believe how grown up all the kids were and how much they had changed in one year. especially jude, who was a tiny tiny guy the last time i saw him.

it was so much fun visiting with this family (hardly felt like working). it reminded me that the connections i make with people in this business are what is important to me. being apart of people’s lives – even for just a day – and helping them capture their lives in photographs. truly good stuff.

bust a gut | i heart faces photo challenge

this week’s challenge over at i heart faces is “bust a gut.” i knew immediately that i would enter with this photo of my niece. to hear her laughter first hand is a gift – it is truly contagious. belly laughs only – light, polite, laughter need not apply. (luckily, my own daughter inherited her cousin’s belly laughter, which i could not be happier about.) when i captured this image, i knew i had, in my own way, bottled happiness.
