embrace the chaos | alexandria virginia family photographer

i enjoy photographing families.

i really enjoy photographing families being real.

things never seem to go “perfectly” during a session, especially when a small human is involved. but, the session can still be awesome, as long as the family (and photographer) are willing to embrace the chaos that is family life with young children.

here’s the thing . . . i love the chaos that is family life with young children. i want you to show it to me. to let me into your life. to allow me to document this for you. because, one day, when you are on the other side, you will want to remember your family in the thick of it. sure, a perfectly posed family portrait from those days will do just fine. but, documentation of the truth – that’s even better. so bring your chaos. i want to capture it.

this family is expecting a new addition. we met because they wanted to document that and to celebrate their family of three before it grows to four. mom and dad – totally on board. small human – not so much. you know what made it all better? – embracing the chaos (otherwise known as a trip to the ice cream shop). i loved working with this family. and, i especially loved their willingness to go with it. the moments captured in the ice cream shop are my favorites from this session.

enjoy.

Sally - Beautiful!

baby will | alexandria virginia newborn photographer

entering a home where a newborn lives is almost like entering sacred space. there is a stillness, a peacefulness, that exists that is almost tangible. but, there is also an uncertainty and a nervousness and a need. a need for connection – a kind word, a knowing smile, a shared reverence of this tiny being that has realigned the world for those closest to him.

i photographed will’s parents when they were just expecting him. and, now, he is here. the difference is night and day. meeting them again – in their home – as parents, moved me. a truly beautiful and loving family.

You – you alone will have the stars as no one else has them…In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night…You – only you – will have stars that can laugh.” -Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince
