what to expect

expect that we will chase the best light! i do not have a studio and prefer to use natural light for photographs. if your home is well-lit, and you prefer to be photographed there, then i will head over to your place. if you’d like to get out of the house a bit, that’s even better! we can head to a favorite location upon your suggestion – a park, the riverfront, an urban setting, a field or farm – or i can suggest a location. outdoor sessions are typically scheduled for early morning or late afternoon to take advantage of optimal lighting.

expect that we will take a few moments to get acquainted – if we are not already so. then, in the words of maurice sendak, “let the wild rumpus start!”

if children are involved, expect a lot of running around! expect laughter. expect the unexpected.
you shouldn’t worry too much about “posing” your children. i love to capture kids being kids! if and when i want more “posed” shots of you or your children, i will let you know. until that time, just do what you do! i enjoy capturing the connections between people – between families – so, don’t be afraid to pretend i am not there!

when it comes to children, i ask that you not direct them too much. often, a request to say “cheese” is met with a grimace! expect that i might pull children aside to photograph them individually. often, children open up to me more when we are one on one. don’t worry – i will bring them back!
